A bunion (Hallux Valgus) manifests itself as a ‘bony prominence’ at the base of the big toe joint, on the side of the foot. It is the condition formed when the long foot bone (1st metatarsal) starts to veer towards the other foot and the big toe starts to move inwards towards the other toes. Usually the 1st metatarsal and the big toe are in a straight line. A bunion is formed when the toe joint is misaligned.
There are a number of causes of bunions and we know that they are often an inherited tendency running through the family line.
Bunions are often accompanied by the formation of a bursa (a fluid-filled sac) over the big toe joint. Inflammation of this bursa can cause severe pain. Once a bunion starts to form, the condition generally worsens, often having an impact on the other toes and causing hammer toes, corns, calluses and chronic foot pain. (1)
The size of bunions can vary greatly. Some people have a very mild foot deformity with a small bump, while others have a large bump with great pain.
See below a pictorial severity scale highlighting the mild to more extreme bunion conditions:
In the UK alone, there are 14 million bunion sufferers, 10 million of whom are women.
The Sole Bliss brand has been developed by expert footwear designer Lisa Kay to help provide a stylish solution for these women, who up until now have struggled to find footwear which is both comfortable AND fashionable.
Sole Bliss shoes are different from all other shoes – they are specifically designed to cater for the shape of a bunioned foot. The forepart of the shoe offers incredible depth and space, but this is cleverly disguised in a fashionable silhouette. Around the widest part of the foot, Sole Bliss shoes have a circumference up to 3 sizes bigger than one’s usual shoe size, whilst still fitting the foot neatly at the back of the shoe.
Within each shoe, the ‘Juanet Technology’ provides an invisible stretch panel to cushion the bunion area, whilst offering triple layer memory foam underfoot to provide the ultimate in comfort and support. A small foam pad prevents the foot from pronating whilst wearing the shoes and they are beautifully lined in super-soft leather and crafted from the very finest leathers and Italian fabrics.
